Birthing Scenes

Petroglyph of a couple joined at the groin beside a figure giving birth

Conception and birth.

Petroglyph panel with a coupling pair among birds and other figures

Conception. The human forms with a bird for the head are common in this area. Fascinating is the figure that seems to be kneeling and holding a bird.

Petroglyphs of mothers with squash blossom hairstyles

It is normal to see the mothers in a squash blossom or similar hairstyle.

Petroglyph tableau of coupling, birth, an upside-down figure and a figure with a cane

This tableau shows a coupling and a birth together. Often when the Ancestral Puebloans show intimacy they depict two figures joined at the groin. What is unique here is that one figure is also giving birth. To the right of this is a figure upside down, which many of us who try to understand rock art take to mean death. And a cane represents old age. So we have conception, birth, old age, and death represented here, the full circle of life.
