Interior Line Style Petroglyphs

Interior Line Style, also called the Dinwoody tradition, is found in central Wyoming, mostly in the Wind River and Bighorn basins. Its pecked figures have bodies filled with lines and patterns, often with elaborate headdresses, and many are thought to relate to the spirit world. It is believed this art was created for thousands of years, possibly beginning in the Archaic period.

This figure is underneath an overhanging rock protecting it from weather, which made it difficult to photograph.

Interior Line Style figures at Legend Rock with horned headdresses and patterned bodies

The Interior Line Style petroglyphs from Legend Rock are the strangest anthropomorphic forms I've seen.

Interior Line Style figure with wavy arms and a lichen-covered body, with lichen growing over parts of the panel

This image is old enough lichen is growing on it and may someday cover it.

Interior Line Style figure with a dotted, patterned body and a snake curving around its lower edge

Note the snake going around the bottom of the main figure.

Large pecked Interior Line Style figure on a red rock face, with arms or branches at its sides and small figures on the rocks at right

If this is an anthropomorphic form it seems upside down at first glance.
